Harry John Yindra, known affectionately as John by his friends and family, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 12, 2024, at the age of 80. Born Aug. 12, 1944, in Newark and raised in Clifton, John moved to Navesink at the tender age of 12. His life was a rich tapestry of dedication, service and joy, which he shared generously with everyone around him.
John’s early years in Navesink were formative and, after bravely serving his country in the U.S. Army – stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War – he returned home with a heart full of dreams. It was then that he married his beloved wife, Susan and, in 1972, they settled in Port Monmouth, building a life together that would span 53 beautiful years. Their union was blessed with a son, John D. Yindra, who brought immense pride and joy to John’s life.
The Yindra family business, Harry Yindra Roofing and Siding, benefited from John’s hard work and dedication as he worked alongside his father Harry. Following his father’s passing, John took the helm, continuing to run the business with the same integrity and commitment that had always been its hallmark. His work ethic and leadership were evident to all who knew him.
Upon retiring from construction, John’s desire to serve his community remained undiminished. He became a beloved crossing guard at Navesink Elementary School, a role he cherished for the past 10 years. His presence there was not just about ensuring safety but also about bringing smiles to the faces of the children and parents he greeted each day.
John was a man of many talents and interests. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace and excitement in trout and fly fishing, often crafting his own flies with skillful hands. His knack for fixing anything that was broken earned him the reputation of being incredibly handy, a trait that was matched by his creativity. Whittling wood and making leather crafts were among his artistic pursuits, and he took great pleasure in these quiet moments of creation.
Music filled John’s home and heart, with jazz and blues being the soundtrack of many family gatherings. He enjoyed playing the guitar, sharing his love for melody and rhythm with all who would listen. His affinity for dogs, especially the coon hounds he and his father took hunting, spoke to his kind and compassionate nature. John’s love for nature extended to bird watching and camping, activities that he often enjoyed with his family. Their trips to Dingmans Ferry, Maine and New York State were cherished traditions filled with laughter and the beauty of the great outdoors.
A man of distinct style, John could often be spotted wearing one of his many hats, a signature accessory that added to his charismatic presence. Those who knew John would describe him as kind, handy and interesting – a man whose character was as multifaceted as the life he led.
John is survived by his devoted wife Susan Yindra, their son John D. Yindra, and a host of close friends who were considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and May Yindra.
John’s legacy is one of love, service, and the joy of a life well-lived. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Family and friends paid their respects Dec. 15, 2024, at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals; a private cremation followed.
