James T. Carroll, 88, of Southern Pines, North Carolina, formerly of Little Silver and Wall Township, passed away Feb. 11, 2024. He was born July 9, 1935.

James is survived by his sister, Sarah (Sally) Carroll Maloney, and his four children, Lisa Carroll Lazzaro, Renee’ Carroll Cuchello, Richard Carroll and James Carroll. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jocelyn Heaney, Dawn Carroll, Julia Cuchelo, Adirane Cuchelo Roundy, Michael Cuchelo, Theresa Cuchelo and Paul Cuchelo; eight great-grandchildren, Landon, Skye, Joey, Summer, Audrey, Cooper, Savannah and Paul IV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene C. and Lorraine, his brother, Eugene J., and his wife, Josette.

James’ educational journey began by skipping the second grade due to the lack of appropriately sized desks at St. James School. He went on to graduate from Red Bank Catholic High School as a star athlete in basketball and football, in the class of 1952. Later, he pursued higher education at Saint Francis College in Loretta, Pennsylvania, where he was the first freshman to make the varsity basketball team.

During his time in the military, James was associated with the National Guard. He served his country with dedication and honor.

James had a successful career as a partner/owner/operator of Seacoast Oil Co., Inc. in Lakewood. He was the former president of the Gasoline Jobbers Association of the State of New Jersey and the former president of the Fuel Merchants of the State of New Jersey. In his retirement, James took up golf and quickly became passionate about the sport. He was also an avid animal lover, never having a home that was not full of pets and a farm full of horses.

As were his wishes, there will be no public memorial service. For anyone who wishes, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association as a way to honor Jim’s memory. No family should have to endure this awful disease.
