John F. Burton, Middletown, died Feb. 7, 2021, at CareOne at King James in Atlantic Highlands after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

John was born Aug. 20, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York and lived in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown for the past 50 years. He was a graduate of Mater Dei High School and Monmouth University.

He was predeceased by his father, John “Jack” Burton, in 2001. He is survived by his mother, Grace Burton, also of Port Monmouth; his brother Thomas Burton and his wife Marifrances and their children Thomas Jr. and Caitlin; his sister Susan Burton; his brother James and his wife Carol; his sister Kerriann Burton-Hans and her husband Brian Hans and their children, Cassandra Ortiz, Alexander Ortiz, Julianne Hans and Brylee Hans; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

John was senior reporter at The Two River Times in Red Bank since 2002. His passions were reading, writing, movies and movie trivia and political topics.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, funeral services will be private and handled by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home in Middletown. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.

Donations in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
