John (“Jack”) Godfrey Middleton, 89, of the Monmouth County area of New Jersey, passed away Jan. 13, 2021, from complications related to COVID-19. The son of Lillie Jenkins and Edward Willoughby Middleton, Jack was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University. While serving as aide to the 4th Division Artillery Commander he met Nancy, daughter of General and Mrs. Willis Matthews. They were married Aug. 13, 1955, at the American Cathedral in Paris.

After five years with IBM, Jack started Middleton Card Company, manufacturing punch cards that were an early version of computer software. In 1971 he joined Discount Corporation of New York, a primary dealer in U.S. Government obligations, retiring in 1991 as vice president. 

Jack was a member of the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, Seabright Beach Club, the Fatmen’s Luncheon Group and the Princeton Club of New York. Board memberships included FISH (For I Shall Help), Oceanic Public Library Trust, All Saints’ Memorial Church National Landmark Trust, All Saints’ Memorial Church Vestry, and Seabright Beach Club. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Nancy. Survivors include daughters Eugenia Middleton and Willis Middleton (John Cashman), son John Middleton (Sue Rinne) and grandchildren Kyra Toomre, Jackson Cashman and Eugenia Cashman.  

Due to the pandemic, a private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the All Saints’ Memorial Church National Landmark Trust, P.O. Box 326, Navesink, NJ 07752.

Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
