John M. Dowd, 71, of Middletown, passed away suddenly April 2, 2021, with his pet canine companion, Charlie, in Middletown. He was born in Long Branch and resided in Middletown most of his life. He was drafted into the U.S. Army as a combat medic and served his country bravely in Vietnam before returning back to New Jersey to be with his family. 

John was a warehouse worker for John Wiley & Sons Inc. for 8 years before retiring. He loved the outdoors and sports. If he was not at the beach, he would either be playing softball or rooting for his favorite teams, the New York Yankees and New York Giants. John was very active in softball and played for several established teams in Monmouth County for over 30 years.

Surviving are his four siblings, Rita M. McManus, Patricia Carroll, Margaret E. Taintor and Joseph T. Dowd, and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Dowd, brother James P. Dowd, nephew Richard H. Wilson and nephew Christopher J. Flanagan.

A memorial visitation was held April 10 at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Funeral prayers were held at the funeral home.
