M Shanghai String Band Will Join The Chocolate Drops For A Night Of Americana Feb. 17

The M Shanghai String Band will open for the Grammy Award-winning trio Carolina Chocolate Drops on Friday, Feb. 17 at Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre.
Conceived in the basement of a Chinese restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, M Shanghai has been whipping crowds into frenzy since 2002. Two river native Richard Morris, a 1990 graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and current resident of Highlands, plays mandolin for the band, which has performed their original brand of roots music at several area venues.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are the newest and youngest players in a long lineage of Black String Bands. The three young musicians formed the group as a tribute to their teacher and inspirations, old-time fiddler Joe Thompson. Their 2010 album, “Genuine Negro Jig,” won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album..
Tickets are $32. For information call the box office, (732) 263-6889 or order online at www.Monmouth.edu/arts.
