It is with great sadness that the family of Martha “Mert” Scarpello, 93, announces her peaceful passing Nov. 21, 2025, surrounded by family.

She was born Feb. 24, 1932, in Newark to Anthony F. and Helen (Usafara) Forgione.

Martha is survived by her brother, Arcalo “Herky” Forgione (wife Nancy) of Manchester, and her sister, Gilda Barnard (husband Daniel) of Angola, Indiana. She is also survived by her best friend, Maria Forgione.

Martha, an aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt, is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews across New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana and Florida, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Daniel Scarpello; her parents, Anthony and Helen; her stepmother, Josephine Forgione; her sisters, Catherine Wysowaty and Nancy Tenore; her brothers, Vincent Forgione and Andrew Forgione; and her longtime companion, Bob Kugel.

Martha worked for many years with Bell Telephone in Newark, and later at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank. Known for her warm spirit and ready humor, she was a loyal friend and a devoted family member. Martha brought joy to every gathering, and her love for those around her was felt deeply and sincerely.

Her kindness, laughter and unwavering affection for her family will be cherished and remembered always.

A memorial visitation was held Dec. 11 at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org, in memory of Martha.
