Mary Elizabeth Alexander, 76, of Lincroft, passed away peacefully at home Aug. 9, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and multiple health complications.

Born in Louisiana and raised in Missouri, Mary bravely journeyed across the country to New Jersey where she worked for many years in telecommunication management at AT&T, eventually retiring from Lucent Technologies.

Mary was an avid lover of contemporary science, technology and gadgetry, and she instilled that passion in her children and grandchildren. She was creative and artistic, appreciating the beauty that surrounded her. She deeply enjoyed photography, making beadwork, and metalwork jewelry.

Cherishing the simple pleasures of life, Mary delighted in walks and evenings watching movies with her grandchildren, sitting and sharing stories with friends and family over a good meal, and savoring her favorite sweets, which included vanilla bean ice cream, peanut butter cookies and dark chocolate. Mary also relished traveling the world with her husband on many trips to far and away places, especially a six-month adventure around the world that they shared in 2019.

Loved by many, Mary is survived by her beloved husband, partner, traveling companion and best friend for nearly 40 years, Lee Alexander; cherished children, Elizabeth Alexander, Chris Mason and wife Sharon, Jeanine Laymon and husband Jeff; adored grandchildren, Jeff Buxton, Mackenzie Buxton, Jessica Mason and Maddie Mason, Tyler Laymon and wife Kim; three great-grandchildren; sisters Sally Ward and Martha Ward; and Louisiana cousins.

A viewing was held Aug. 26 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, immediately followed by a Celebration of Mary’s Life at the funeral home. A private cremation followed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to her second home and family at Aikido of Red Bank, P.O. Box 8895, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
