Arthur V. Murphy Jr., 87, of Shrewsbury, passed away Jan. 19. Arthur was born to Arthur V. Murphy Sr. and Dorothy Evans Murphy in Jersey City. He was raised in Jersey where he attended Lincoln High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army and serving in the Korean War. He is a member of the American Legion. He was a lifelong resident of Red Bank prior to moving to Shrewsbury.

Arthur was an elevator mechanic for Otis Elevator in New York City for over 40 years and was also a member of Elevator Union Local No. 1 in New York City. After retirement he was an elevator consultant.

He was a member of the Red Bank Planning and Zoning Boards, the Briody Bunch, a Pop Warner football coach and also coached CYO basketball. Arthur was also a communicant of St. James RC Church. He was a fan of the Rangers, Giants and Knicks. 

Arthur was a longtime member of the Sea Bright Bathing Pavilion where he enjoyed spending time with his sisters and family. 

Arthur is predeceased by his daughter Kathleen in 1959. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 67 years Muriel; his nine children, Michael Murphy of Shrewsbury, Arthur V. Murphy III of Red Bank, Thomas Murphy (Janine) of Denver, Colorado, Timothy Murphy (Susan) of Shrewsbury, Sean Murphy (Nancy) of Red Bank, Mary P. Murphy of Red Bank, Diane Davis (John) of Red Bank, Rosemary Murphy of Mantoloking and Meghan Gasek (Jim) of Hudson, Massachusetts; his sister Rosemary Kirk of Shrewsbury; and his 24 grandchildren.

Visitation was Jan. 22 at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial was be celebrated Jan. 23 at St. James RC Church, Red Bank. Burial was private.
