McHugh, Joan D., Age: 81, Little Silver

Joan D. McHugh, 81, of Little Silver, passed away Monday, September 19 at home with her family at her side. Joan was called to heaven peacefully in her sleep. She was born in NYC to the late James J. Galligan and Anne Theresa (nee: O’Connor).

Joan was a volunteer at Riverview Medical Center for many years and a member of the Monmouth Beach Club, the Navesink Country Club and an avid bridge player.

Most of all, Joan (Granny) was a loving, caring and doting mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be sorely missed. She always put the needs of others before those of her own. She knew how to listen to everyone’s problems, and then she made them her own until they were solved and we all felt better. Granny loved us all, prayed for us all daily, and would do anything for us.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, H. Bart McHugh III, whom she met when she was 10 and he was 12. They later married in 1955; he was her first and only love. Joan also was predeceased by her older sister, Patricia Anne Jamison. Joan is survived by her loving children and their spouses, H. Bart McHugh IV (aka Cash), James John and Catherine McHugh, Marianne M. and Raymond F. Tiley, Diane M. and Richard G. Davis, Barbara Swintek and Patricia V. and Darren E. Gallagher. She is the cherished grandmother of Ray, Danielle, Megan, Jennifer, Jamie, Richard, Bobby, Kelsey, Mark, Sarah, Molly, Jillian and Charlotte; and great-grandmother of Amos, Eowyn and Vivian. Also surviving is her loving sister Wendy Roebuck.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4-8 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 23 at Church of the Nativity, Ridge Road in Fair Haven. Interment will immediately follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Chapel Hill Rd. Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arc of Monmouth County, 1158 Wayside Road, Asbury Park, NJ 07712. Please visit Joan’s memorial website at www.johnedayfuneralhome.com.
