Walter F. Reiser, 55, of West Long Branch, died at home on Saturday, July 16 surrounded by the family he loved. Walt was a loving and dedicated husband and father whose life was lived in service to others. He lived in Melville, Long Island, before moving to West Long Branch 18 years ago.

He graduated from Springfield College in 1983. After attaining a master’s degree in sports medicine in 1984, he became one of the first full-time athletic trainers in New Jersey when he began his career at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School. In 1987, he was named athletic director and served in that position until his retirement in 2014.

He was an active member of the Monmouth County Director of Athletics Association, where he served two terms as president and was treasurer for many years. He was recognized by that association as Athletic Director of the Year in 2000.

Despite his professional achievements, Walt found his true joy and meaning in his two daughters, Emily and Allie, whom he adored. He particularly enjoyed coaching them in various sports as they grew and attending their games in high school and was so proud of all of their accomplishments. He will be greatly missed by them and by his wife of 28 years, Kathy.

He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Edward Reiser. Walt will be mourned by his brothers and sisters-in-law from Long Island, Ed and Terry, Rob and Kathy, Jim and Bea and their families and his sisters-in-law and their families from Connecticut, Debbie and Jeff Bevino, Donna and Mike Melisi and Lisa Urbanowicz and George Salanto. Walt was cherished by many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He leaves behind numerous lifetime friends with whom cherished memories were created.

An avid runner all of his life, Walt is lovingly sent home to God by those who love him with the words of St. Paul, “having run with endurance he has finished the good race.”
