HOLMDEL – Saint John Vianney senior quarterback and safety Aaron Van Trease suffered a serious neck injury on the third play of the Lancers’ home game against Manasquan Sept. 23. Van Trease was playing defense at the time, attempting a tackle when the injury occurred.

SJV head football coach Jeff Papcun told multiple media outlets Van Trease had no feeling in his lower body but did have movement in his upper body as he was stretchered off the field.

He was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he underwent surgery last Saturday.

Saint John Vianney principal Margaret Kane released a statement last Saturday confirming the surgery. “Parents are asking for prayers and privacy at this time as he recovers,” she said.

The Lancers went on to beat Manasquan 32-0 to record their fourth straight win. Van Trease has been a catalyst, playing on both sides of the ball. In a 30-0 win over Monmouth Regional he had two touchdown runs and his fourth TD pass of the season.

Saint John Vianney returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Marlboro. Ironically, Mustangs starting quarterback AJ Schwartz suffered a serious season-ending leg injury, so neither team will have its starting quarterback on the field.

The SJV players, coaches and administrators gathered Monday morning for a Mass. Athletic director Pat Smith posted on his social media accounts, “Shore Conference Family: We are a Catholic Community & Believe in the Power of Prayer. Please keep our humble young man (#18) and his Family in yours Prayers as he Rests & Recovers.”

Well wishes and prayers have come from throughout the high school football community.
