The legendary Holmdel Horn is now owned by the township and will soon be a 35-acre public park, bringing to an end the months-long battle over development of the site and the future of the historic antenna. The park will be named for the township’s longtime resident and Nobel-winning physicist Dr. Robert Wilson.

The Holmdel Horn Antenna will be preserved on Crawford Hill as part of a 35-acre public park, township officials announced after completing a successful negotiation with property owner Crawford Hill Holdings LLC.

Hailed by some residents as the “greatest” first move, the township committee voted unanimously to authorize the appraisal of the legendary Horn Antenna property atop Crawford Hill at 791 Holmdel Road, as a first step in potentially acquiring it by eminent domain.

Citizens, the township and the developer have all said they want to preserve the historic Horn Antenna, but where it will be located has created a conundrum, putting the groups at odds with each other.

Township officials, buoyed by the support of residents and concerned groups, have filed a lawsuit in state Superior Court over ownership of the Horn Antenna.

The world-renowned Holmdel Horn Antenna, which proved the creation of the universe by confirming evidence of the Big Bang theory, is under threat, say residents.
