MIDDLETOWN – Facing a $10 million budget gap for the upcoming school year, the Middletown Township Board of Education approved a tentative 2025-2026 school budget that may require the closing of three schools.

HOLMDEL – The potential elimination of courtesy busing for students took center stage at a recent township committee meeting, where board of education (BOE) officials requested increased financial support from the township to address the district’s upcoming budget gaps.

FAIR HAVEN – Facing soaring prices and a burdensome state mandate, borough officials had a tough choice in awarding a trash and recycling contract that would decrease service for the next few years. However, a new development indicates the issue can be sidestepped.

Officials introduced the township’s 2024 budget, reflecting increased operating costs, new state mandates and more costs to fight builder’s remedy lawsuits.

County officials introduced their $526 million budget for 2024. A public hearing on the matter is slated for the April 25 county commissioners’ meeting when the budget will most likely be adopted.

At a time when the political climate appears its most divisive, one local politician has demonstrated the power of bipartisan collaboration.

The Middletown Township Committee addressed a range of topics at its May 15 meeting, from acquiring new open space to budget approval to potential tobacco and smoke regulations.

During its April 26 meeting, the borough council approved an ordinance requiring all volunteers, coaches, assistant coaches, board members and seasonal employees with direct and regular access to minors through Atlantic Highlands’ recreation and sports programs be fingerprinted and undergo a criminal background check. Failure to submit to the mandatory requirements would result in exclusion from the borough’s programs.

More than two dozen volunteer firefighters from the Red Bank Fire Department (RBFD) showed up at a council meeting April 12 to ask for the rent increase in a municipal budget that failed to reflect last year’s agreed-upon request.
