MIDDLETOWN – The future of the former Circus Liquors property remains up in the air following a recent court ruling.

Circus Wines, Beer & Spirits, a longtime fixture on Route 35 in the township, plans to relocate farther up the highway into Middletown Plaza by Nov. 1. But its landmark signage, Calico the Evil Clown, probably won’t move with the store.

The township committee has designated the Circus Liquors property along Route 35 as an area in need of redevelopment for condemnation purposes, initiating the process of taking ownership of it.

The township committee announced a new developer for the Circus Liquors site at its Aug. 21 meeting while also adopting a resolution to have the planning board look into designating the property as an area in need of redevelopment for condemnation purposes.
