Democrat Mikie Sherrill made history Tuesday as the first woman from her party elected governor of New Jersey. She defeated Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli in a race that kept the state solidly blue, even as Monmouth County voters largely backed Republicans, including Ciattarelli, preserving the region as a GOP stronghold.

Election Day – Tuesday, Nov. 4 – is fast approaching. Mail-in ballots have arrived, and early voting is open across the county. On the ballot this year are some competitive races, including those for governor and other state, county, municipal and board of education seats.

HIGHLANDS – The nonpartisan election for mayor of Highlands is the only municipal race before voters in the Nov. 4 general election. Incumbent Mayor Carolyn Broullon (We Are All in This Together) is being challenged by a former council member and council president, Rebecca J. Wells (Deep Roots New Wave).

HOLMDEL – Three candidates are running for two open seats on the township committee in the Nov. 4 general election. Voters will see two familiar faces, both Republicans – incumbent Mayor Brian Foster and former mayor Gregory Buontempo – and Democrat Allan C. Roth.

TINTON FALLS – Borough residents will see 12 candidates seeking municipal offices on their ballots this election year, with three different slates announcing their candidacy for mayor and borough council.

HOLMDEL – Six candidates have filed to run for three open seats on the Holmdel Board of Education in the Nov. 4 election.

RED BANK – Voters will decide who will serve on their local school boards this November, as four candidates are running for three seats on the Red Bank Borough Public Schools board, which oversees the preschool, elementary and middle schools.

RED BANK – Members of the Red Bank’s Ready team that swept the 2023 elections are returning to the ballot in November, as the borough continues with its new nonpartisan, council-manager form of government.

NEW JERSEY – Candidates preparing for the 2025 primary election might have to work a little harder to qualify for the ballot. Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill Feb. 3 that increases the number of signatures candidates need to run for certain state, county and local offices.

MIDDLETOWN – Republican incumbent township committee member Tony Perry, currently the town’s mayor, will face Democratic challenger Michael Morris in the Nov. 5 general election. It would be a breakthrough for Democrats if Morris wins the one open seat on the township’s all-Republican, five-member governing body.
