HOLMDEL – Facing a critical shortage of volunteer emergency medical technicians that left over a third of emergency calls unanswered, the township committee unanimously approved a shared services agreement with the Monmouth County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to ensure residents receive timely medical response.

With a looming personnel shortage, maintaining the ranks of local volunteer emergency services is becoming a challenge. Three state bills in the works hope to attract more residents to staff these lifesaving departments.

Borough EMS and police department members were honored Feb. 26 for successfully navigating an unusual emergency call.

Monmouth County has stepped up to resolve the emergency medical service (EMS) crisis triggered by a critical shortage of volunteers. The county launched its own EMS hub called MedStar, located at the Charles Wood Fire Station on the borough’s former Fort Monmouth grounds, to assist surrounding agencies in need of emergency medical services.

Last October, 79-year-old Mary Nichols fell unconscious in her Rumson home. When Nichols didn’t show up to meet a friend, her husband, Robert Nichols, rushed home to find her passed out and called 911.
