HIGHLANDS – Federal policy moves could jeopardize a multimillion-dollar flood mitigation and green infrastructure project in Highlands, as FEMA officials announced they are ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant program, a key funding source for the project.

HIGHLANDS – Following a November referendum in which residents overwhelmingly voted against the proposed Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, the borough council formally rejected the floodwall project at its Dec. 18 meeting.

HIGHLANDS – A $130 million potential project was revisited in Highlands May 14 as officials look to bolster the borough’s flood resilience.

The borough anticipates receiving its largest grant ever to tackle its longstanding townwide flooding issues.

Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency Sept. 30, as heavy rain caused flooding in coastal regions throughout the state.

A new team of Kean University researchers believes measurements of sand movements, wave energy and the shoreline itself in the Borough of Keyport can provide crucial data to combat the effects of climate change on the greater Bayshore community.

The transformation of a local ball field into a massive stormwater retention center is a linchpin element in the borough’s proposal to mitigate nuisance flooding on residential roadways.

“So this has been an issue ongoing for Highlands for many years,” said Gonzales. “Their storm system is not up to par. If it was a municipality taking care of it, they’d have to do improvements.”
