SANDY HOOK – A growing coalition of preservationists, elected officials and residents is calling on the National Park Service (NPS) to halt plans to demolish the historic William Sandlass House, a 19th-century structure located at the entrance to the Gateway National Recreation Area on Sandy Hook.

RED BANK – With a surge in the construction of mixed-use buildings underway, officials are making efforts at the same time to preserve the borough’s oldtown historic charm.

MONMOUTH COUNTY – County officials unveiled the winners of this year’s historic preservation grants. In the Two River area, special projects in Middletown, Fair Haven and Atlantic Highlands will receive funding.

MIDDLETOWN – For most Middletown residents, preserving open space is a priority. That was evident from November’s ballot referendum: Two-thirds of voters supported raising the annual collection rate of the Open Space, Recreation, Floodplain Protections, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund.

The history and charm of old houses is undeniable but so is the commitment it takes to preserve them. And whether tucked far down hidden driveways or standing amid urban sprawl, the history of Monmouth County is evident in centuries-old houses, barns and farmsteads.

The Monmouth County Historical Commission recently announced it is accepting nominations for its 2023 Preservation Awards initiative.
