MIDDLETOWN - A once-vacant lot in Campbell's Junction has been transformed into a beacon of gratitude. On Nov. 2, township officials, veterans and residents gathered at 37-45 Leonardville Road for the ribbon cutting of Middletown’s new Veterans Village, a 22,000-square-foot complex that will provide 12 residential units for local veterans.

Last month, the state Assembly voted 51-28 in favor of bill A4/S50 which would reform municipal responsibilities on affordable housing and abolish the state’s Council on Affordable Housing (COAH), replacing it with a set of new policies to settle housing development disputes.

While the borough is making strides toward meeting its affordable housing obligations by the 2025 deadline, residents at the latest council meeting were upset about some aspects of the process.

The borough’s zoning board of adjustment approved a residential building for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, the first of its kind in New Jersey. The proposed building will replace an existing two-story building with a three-story apartment complex with support services at 273 Shrewsbury Ave. at the intersection of Drs. James Parker Boulevard.

Laughter – and a few tears – permeated the proceedings May 18 when the women’s wing of the Gordon H. Mansfield veteran’s complex on Essex Road was dedicated for Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, who launched and spearheaded the 10-year effort to make the facility a reality.

After years of delays, construction is slated to begin on the Azalea Gardens housing project at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Harding Road. The original proposal for the project was approved by the borough zoning board in 2017.
