TINTON FALLS – Vito Perillo, the two-term mayor of Tinton Falls – believed to be the oldest mayor in the United States – died Feb. 22 at the age of 100. A World War II veteran, electronics engineer and then a public servant in his 90s, Perillo’s story was one of resilience and dedication to community service.

SHREWSBURY – Mayor Kimberly Eulner, a Republican, is running unopposed in the upcoming Nov. 5 election.

The election lawsuit that left the future of the borough’s leadership uncertain came to a surprising end this week. Current Atlantic Highlands Mayor Lori Hohenleitner’s position was confirmed when the suit was withdrawn.

In a key development in the lawsuit challenging the results of November’s borough elections, the complaint against newly elected council member Alyson Forbes was struck down. Forbes will remain in her seat.

She is the 20th mayor and only the third woman to lead the borough in its history.

The Atlantic Highlands Republicans held an election night vigil at the law office of Wendy Crowther on First Avenue, hosting a crowd of about 25 supporters, family members and friends who came to stand by their candidates – James Murphy for mayor, and Ellen O’Dwyer-Woods and Arthur “Vinnie” Whitehead for borough council.

The opening of the Atlantic Highlands Planning Board special meeting Sept. 19 became a somber affair as council member Brian Dougherty announced the passing of Atlantic Highlands’ first woman mayor, Helen Marchetti, at 98 years of age. There was a moment of silence.

Atlantic Highlands Borough Council member James Murphy recently announced his bid for mayor and spoke exclusively to The Two River Times about his candidacy. Murphy, a Republican, faces current council president Lori Hohenleitner, a Democrat, in the Nov. 7 General Election. Current Atlantic Highlands Mayor Loretta Gluckstein, a Republican, is not running for reelection. She presides over a heavily Democratic council, with Murphy the lone Republican.
