Circus Wines, Beer & Spirits, a longtime fixture on Route 35 in the township, plans to relocate farther up the highway into Middletown Plaza by Nov. 1. But its landmark signage, Calico the Evil Clown, probably won’t move with the store.

Driving down Browns Dock Road, it’s easy to miss the sign for Scudder Preserve but the rich yet obscure 90-acre wooded habitat is about to catapult into the spotlight with its acquisition by Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF).

The gods of gibberish, the yellow spuds, the BA-NA-NA devotees. Whatever moniker you prefer, the utterly unintelligible yet most endearing animated Minions have been international superstars since they burst onto the scene as the inept but willing sidekicks in “Despicable Me” in 2010. Since then, many of their continuing movie antics have grown from the imagination of Lincroft native Brian Lynch, who used his childhood in the Two River area as inspiration.

They sneak into town under cover of darkness and, as if by magic, when you awake, it is there. Where once stood only a vacant lot or open space park, there is now a midway with games of chance, food vendors and a stage, surrounded by rides for the young and young at heart.

MIDDLETOWN – The 70th annual St. Mary Great Fair opened Monday, June 24 in the church parking lot on Cherry Tree Farm Road.

MIDDLETOWN – A nearly 200-year-old cemetery in the township recently received approvals to construct a new graveyard, which has some Oak Hill area residents concerned.
