During its June 12 meeting, the Fair Haven Borough Council introduced an ordinance that would prohibit short-term rentals within residential districts. The ordinance targets temporary stays for periods under 95 days, slapping offenders with hefty fines.

At a 10 a.m. special meeting Friday, March 3, a handful of residents witnessed a council majority override the rarely used mayoral veto in Red Bank.

Following Mayor Billy Portman’s decision Feb. 22 to veto the short-term rental ordinance passed by council 5-1 at its Feb. 8 meeting, council president Michael Ballard has called for a special meeting to discuss the action.

Short-term rentals in a town that is neither popular for skiing nor going to the beach have become a contentious issue between the public and borough council. Amidst much pushback at a Feb. 8 meeting, the borough council passed a controversial ordinance to regulate short-term rentals in the borough.
