The rain was holding off, just barely, at the Shrewsbury Presbyterian Church on Sycamore Avenue Oct. 14 as members of the Daughters of the American Revolution Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter gathered for a graveside ceremony honoring two former members.

Schools opened this week, but some students in Shrewsbury had to find their own transportation. In what a few parents called a “shocking” decision, the Shrewsbury Borough School District will not offer courtesy busing or aid-in-lieu payments to non-public school students for the 2023-24 school year.

After months of opposition from residents, the Shrewsbury Land Use Board denied the Martelli Development Group’s application to replace an existing residence with a commercial building in the borough’s historic district.

Much to the relief of the coastal fishing and recreational communities, long-awaited dredging along the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers has commenced. U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-6) announced the start of the project during a conference held at Veterans Memorial Park July 25 and livestreamed on social media.

Not convinced by the professional planner’s testimony, residents continued to argue against Martelli Development Group’s bifurcated application for a land use variance to replace an existing house with an office building in historic downtown Shrewsbury.

The developer made an enticing offer, but residents aren’t biting.
