Meridian Cancer Care Welcomes Dr. Abbas

RED BANK – Meridian Cancer Care has welcomed Ghulam Abbas, M.D., MCHM, FACS, a fellowship-trained cardiothoracic and minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgeon, as director of minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
As director, Abbas will advance and broaden the program’s minimally invasive thoracic surgery capabilities, including robotic and video assisted approaches to the lung, chest and esophageal regions.
For the past eight years, Abbas has served as an assistant professor for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Medical Center.
He completed fellowship training in minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and cardiothoracic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Prior to his fellowship training, Abbas completed his general surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. He also holds a master’s degree in health care management from Harvard School of Public Health.
Abbas has a wide range of clinical interests, including robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, video-assisted thoracic surgery as well as CyberKnife.
Throughout his career, he has held a number of administrative appointments, including as chairman of the Department of Surgery for UPMC Passavant in Pittsburgh and chief of general thoracic surgery at UPMC Mckeesport and Passavant.
Additionally, Abbas is an active member in the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Robotic Surgery and American College of Physician Executives. He also has contributed to more than 30 medical publications, and has lectured nationally and internationally.

As a member of the Meridian Cancer Care Team, Abbas will be based at Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, while also maintaining privileges throughout Meridian Cancer Care, including Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick and Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin.
