The borough’s transit village plan, slowed due to the pandemic, is back on track as the Red Bank Planning Board unanimously voted to approve and advance a redevelopment study report to the governing body. The study identifies specific parcels around the train station for redevelopment and is a vital step toward the borough council’s initiative to transform the area into a thriving transit village.

The Harbor Commission held its monthly meeting March 7 at Borough Hall. During the session, commissioner James Krauss provided a report on recreational fishing, which he explained is “extremely important to our head boats, our charter boats, and a huge percentage of our power boats.” Head boats generally take larger numbers of guests out to fish at one time while charter boats are usually contracted by smaller private parties.

After another marathon meeting last month, the Atlantic Highlands Planning Board voted to deny the Kalian Companies’ request for five bulk variances and nine waivers, effectively quashing a project that rankled residents from the first proposal.

The redevelopment study undertaken by the township to transform the Route 36 corridor in Middletown is making steady progress. After a public presentation in March on the process, Stan Slachetka, principal planner with T&M Associates, returned with a PowerPoint presentation for the first in a series of three special planning board meetings to review properties that qualify as areas in need of redevelopment.

Citing “inconsistencies” with the borough Master Plan, the planning board unanimously rejected a draft zoning ordinance establishing where in the borough cannabis businesses would be permitted.
