6/16 – Body Discovered Off Sandy Hook
By John Burton
SANDY HOOK – A body was discovered a few miles from shore off of Sandy Hook this morning.
A recreational fisherman discovered the body of an adult male at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the Ambrose Channel, off of Gateway National Recreational Area at Sandy Hook, said Charles Rowe, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman.
The Staten Island fisherman secured the body to his vessel with a rope and contacted the Coast Guard’s Sandy Hook station, which dispatched a small boat to retrieve it, Rowe said.
Coast Guard members brought the body to the Sandy Hook station and contacted the New Jersey State Police, which is the lead investigator in the case, according to Rowe.
There was no sign of debris or of a marine accident in the immediate vicinity of the body’s discovery and it does not correlate with any search and rescue operation the Coast Guard has underway, according to Rowe.
The Ambrose Channel runs from past Breezy Point, N.Y., and Sandy Hook to the upper New York Harbor at the tip of Manhattan and is use mostly by deep draft commercial vessels, Rowe said.
