Michael Desmond Berg, 87, of Oceanport, passed away peacefully July 21, 2024. He is survived by his four children, Alex, Daniel, Nicole and Joshua; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, James and Charles; numerous relatives and many dear friends. Special thanks to Marlene Betesh, his closest companion in his final years, for her unwavering support and comfort.
Mike was warm and approachable, always ready with a joke and a willing ear. He had your back and was a steadfast presence in the lives of those who knew him.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike grew up playing stickball in Newark and aspired to be the next Mickey Mantle. His dreams were cut short by polio, but he never let that slow him down, even playing goalkeeper on his varsity soccer team. He loved Monmouth County from the time he moved to Oceanport as a child, and dedicated himself to the local community by coaching youth sports and supporting local activities.
Mike founded Wayside Residence Retirement Home with his father and operated it for nearly 50 years. He was a proud graduate of Bethany College, was listed in “Who’s Who in American Colleges,” served in the National Guard, and volunteered on many municipal councils.
Above all, Mike valued his friendships, maintaining close bonds with people from all stages of his life. His slightly goofy and infectious laugh lives on in his children.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Mike’s name can be made to Rotary’s End Polio Now Campaign at my.rotary.org/en/polioplus-fund.
