William J. Strehl, known affectionately as Bill to his friends and family, passed away peacefully Dec. 1, 2024, in Interlachen, Florida, where he enjoyed the warmth of the winter sun for the past five years. Born May 4, 1946, in New York City, Bill was a man whose life was defined by devotion to his family, service to his country and a love for the simple joys of life.

Bill’s journey began in the bustling streets of New York City, where he was born to the late William and Stella Strehl. He spent his early years in Queens; in 1976, he moved his growing family to Port Monmouth. It was there that he and his beloved wife of 50 years, Valerie, nurtured their three sons, Joseph (Jennifer), Dustin (Maggie), and William. In 2010, Bill and Valerie settled in the Highlands, creating a home filled with love and laughter.

A proud veteran, Bill served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War, a period that shaped much of his character and values. After his service, he embarked on a career as a color controller with Technicolor Films in New York City, where he brought his keen eye for detail to the world of film. His talents extended beyond the screen, as he was also a certified Black Seal Steamfitter and carpenter. Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Home Doctor Home Improvements in Middletown, where he was known for his exceptional craftsmanship and willingness to help others.

Bill’s sister, Diane Vaness, fondly remembers her brother’s boundless energy and kind heart. He was a beloved Pop-pop to his nine grandchildren: Rachel, Billy, Emma, Jonathan, Justin, Alexa, Kayla, R.J. and Damian. Each of them cherished the moments spent learning how to fish and work with their hands under their grandfather’s patient guidance.

Fishing was Bill’s greatest passion after his family. He was a familiar face at Leonardo Marina, where he shared his fishing wisdom and captivating fish tales with anyone who would listen. His love for the sport extended to his involvement in several fishing clubs and organizations where he made many lifelong friends.

Bill’s interests were as vast as his talents. He found solace in his garden, where he cultivated not just plants but also a sense of peace and tranquility. His dexterity was not limited to outdoor pursuits; he was also adept at building and repairing computers, a testament to his belief that there was nothing he couldn’t learn or do. Bill’s hands were rarely still, as he was always tinkering with small projects, finding joy in the act of creation and repair.

Bill’s legacy is one of love, service and dedication. He leaves behind a family that adores him, friends who respect him, and a community that will miss his generous spirit. As we say goodbye to William J. Strehl, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that will continue to inspire and guide us in the days to come. Bill’s memory will be cherished, his stories retold, and his love felt, always.

A memorial service was held Dec. 20, 2024, at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals.
