RUMSON – The borough fire department, with assistance from the Fair Haven department, quickly got under control a fire that destroyed a Sailer’s Way backyard play set Tuesday evening.

According to Rumson Fire Chief Kevin McCarthy, the department received the initial report at approximately 6:49 p.m., with the first report incorrectly indicating it was a Buena Vista Ave address.

Surprisingly “It was a big fire,” said McCarthy, who when he arrive suspected it was a house blaze.

Approximately 20 firefighters from the Rumson and Oceanic fire companies, with Fair Haven members and one engine providing support. It took approximately one hour to extinguish it and department members were initially delayed accessing the site because of a CAT construction vehicle blocking the driveway, McCarthy said. “There was a pretty large volume of fire,” he said.

The Sailer’s Way home is in the final stages of construction and is unoccupied. There was no injuries reported but the play set was completed destroyed, McCarthy said.

The fire marshal said the source of the fire is “unspecified” but “not suspicious.”
