John G. Tormey, age 94, of Middletown, affectionately known as “Jack,” died Aug. 1, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in his parents’ home in Jersey City in 1927 and lived in Ideal Beach for most of his life.

Jack worked for 37 years as a member of the custodial staff for the Red Bank Post Office; he took much pride in his work. He served his country bravely as a member of the United States Navy in World War II as a Fireman First Class V-6 USNR on the destroyer the USS Charles P. Cecil. He was honored to serve and enjoyed all the places he was stationed including Japan, Hawaii and Virginia.

Jack was a dog lover and his Samoyed Lance was his beloved companion. He enjoyed walking him in his neighborhood and on the beach at the Bayshore. He was an avid N.Y. Mets fan and enjoyed watching many games. He longed to visit the places he was stationed and traveled with his family multiple times back to Hawaii and San Francisco. He was enormously generous and donated monthly to the charities of St. Jude, Boys Town, Shriners Hospital for Children, Lunch Break and Fulfill.

Surviving Jack are his brother Robert Tormey; his three nieces, Christine (Kevin) Lowe, Colleen Gryta and Kerry (Daniel) Weber; and seven great-nieces and nephews, Holden, Hunter and Hyatt Lowe, Ava and Grant Gryta, and Megan and Daniel Weber.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Loretta Tormey, and his sister-in-law Maryann Tormey.

Visitation was held Aug. 4 at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral Mass followed at The Church of Saint Catherine Laboure, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jack’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.
