Sarah J. Winmill died July 8 at the age of 89. She grew up in New York City and Bernardsville and was a longtime resident of Rumson. She descended from the Lee and Page families of Virginia, the Jones family of Savannah, Georgia and the Post family of New York.
She was married for 58 years to the late Bassett S. Winmill. She is survived by her children: Mrs. Starr Winmill Shebesta of Maineville, Ohio; Mark C. Winmill of Millerton, New York; and Thomas B. Winmill of Walpole, New Hampshire. She also leaves two grandsons, William M. Winmill and Woodworth B. Winmill, and a granddaughter Georgia B. Winmill.
Mrs. Winmill graduated from the Chapin School and Chatham Hall School and attended Bryn Mawr College. An avid horticulturalist, she was past president of both the New Jersey Daffodil Society and Rumson Garden Club, and an accredited judge of the American Daffodil Society. In 2014 she was awarded the title of judge emeritus of the Garden Club of America “in appreciation of many years of knowledgeable service as a Garden Club of America Approved Judge.” At the time she was the only living recipient of the honor. She was a member of the Rumson Garden Club, the Rumson Country Club, the Seabright Beach Club, the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, and The Colony Club.
She will be remembered for her high standards and sense of humor, her parties, her flowers, and her love of family and friends.
She was buried at All Saints Memorial Episcopal Church, Navesink. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Thanksgiving Foundation, 640 Smithfield Road, Millerton, NY 12546, or to the Garden Club of America, 3rd Floor, 14 East 60th St., New York, NY 10022.
Thompson Memorial Home in Red Bank was entrusted with the arrangements.
