RED BANK – The St. James Elementary and Red Bank Catholic High School community gratefully honored the Sisters of Mercy for 125 years of service to their schools on Sunday, Sept. 22.
The Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton, celebrated a special Mass in St. James Church during which more than 50 sisters were honored, followed by a reception where they reminisced with current and former students, parents and teachers.
Also in attendance were 10 priests from the area, some of whom had served with the sisters or were taught by them when they were students at Red Bank Catholic.

In September 1888, the first Sisters of Mercy arrived in Red Bank to administer to a small, growing Catholic school in the community. That school became St. James Elementary and Red Bank Catholic High Schools, where more than 140 Sisters of Mercy have served ever since.
Current RBC teacher Sr. Joanmarie McDonnell offered everyone involved in the day’s planning “our prayerful thank you and our loving gratitude.”
