Democrat Mikie Sherrill made history Tuesday as the first woman from her party elected governor of New Jersey. She defeated Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli in a race that kept the state solidly blue, even as Monmouth County voters largely backed Republicans, including Ciattarelli, preserving the region as a GOP stronghold.

It’s not often the public is offered an inside glimpse into what it is like to run a state or national agency. But last week, Brookdale Community College professor of political science Jonathan Moschberger hosted Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator under President George W. Bush, for a deep-dive into her career.

New Jersey and New York have, at times, had a contentious relationship. It is usually the result of issues, like raising commuter taxes, determining which state can claim ownership of the Statue of Liberty, or that Staten Island secession movement.

At a time when young people are struggling with mental health issues at unprecedented rates, a state plan to eliminate school-based mental health services and replace them with regional alternatives is eliciting outrage from educators, students and elected officials locally and around the state.
