New Jersey City University, based in Jersey City with a two-year-old campus on Fort Monmouth, continues enacting measures to regain its financial footing and keep the Oceanport campus open, including offering its facilities to outside groups.

Newly named New Jersey City University (NJCU) interim president Andrés “Andy” Acebo said Tuesday the key to the future of its Fort Monmouth campus is increased enrollment and that the school will remain open. 

Two months ago, New Jersey City University officials were contemplating vacating the school’s year-old campus on Fort Monmouth following revelations of a financial crisis at the Jersey City-based institution. Last week’s announcement of a new round of cost-cutting measures are bolstering hope the school will remain open on the redeveloping former U.S. Army base.

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey City University (NJCU) is considering vacating its year-old Fort Monmouth campus as it enacts cost reduction measures following June’s revelation of a financial emergency at the 92-year-old Jersey City-based public institution.

Last Friday, Gov. Phil Murphy formally requested an independent investigation into the “financial emergency” at New Jersey City University (NJCU), a public college headquartered in Jersey City with a one-year-old campus on Fort Monmouth.
