The first time I made macarons, I was 14. My family was on vacation in Paris, and we spent an entire day tucked away in an underground kitchen, La Cuisine Paris, learning the art of the notoriously fickle macaron.

There might not be anything more quintessentially New Jersey than sitting down in a diner. And chances are you won’t have to go far to find one, with nearly 600 across the state.

With over 140 miles of coastline, New Jersey has no shortage of access to the ocean, so it’s no surprise that fresh seafood is one of our state’s strengths.

The unofficial start of summer on the Jersey Shore is marked by the rhythm of waves dancing along the sand and the scent of saltwater in the air. Locals and visitors alike flock to our beaches, restaurants, bars and shops to soak in the quintessential “Jersey Shore Summer.”

It has been said that “eating well is the best revenge,” a play on the “living well…” quote. I’m not sure what we are getting even for, but at the end of the year I was left with a number of fond memories of some of the best things I ate while reviewing area restaurants over the previous 12 months.

The building at the corner of East River Road and Black Point Road in Rumson has been home to various restaurants for decades.
