By the year 2030, many jobs and job titles we are familiar with today will cease to exist. The workplace as we know it will become unrecognizable. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future Jobs Report, approximately 92 million jobs, which constitute about 8% of all employment, will be eliminated.
On the brighter side, although technological advancements are leading to the loss of many conventional jobs, they are also creating new roles and opportunities. Many of these new career opportunities are yet to be discovered. Consequently, college-bound students and young professionals are planning and preparing differently for this new era of job and career changes.
While the term “college prep” once referred mainly to academic rigor and readiness for the traditional college experience, the term today has far more inclusive preparatory opportunities for a changing workforce landscape.
The college prep experience in secondary schools is undergoing a palpable shift, providing students with diverse opportunities to prepare for college and professional careers that demand new skill sets. This ensures that students entering college and eventually the workforce are not left behind.
At the secondary level, there has been a surge in new programs and courses in the humanities, STEM, robotics, AI literacy, innovation labs for guided research, digital fluency, data analysis, leadership and communication, all aimed at cultivating broad-based critical thinking and problem-solving intelligence. Fine arts, performing arts and athletic competitions are also categorically integral to a modern-day, well-rounded college prep experience. The greater the variety of learning experiences, the greater the chance to unleash the unique potential that lies within all students.
More and more college prep environments have students actively participating in extended hands-on activities and competitions in various important subject areas, including speech and debate, environmental studies, and business, economics, entrepreneurship, science and leadership certificate programs. These new certificate-based programs recognize students’ credentials before high school graduation, and in many cases provide a competitive edge for college admissions. The proliferation of these highly interactive certificate programs is fundamental to many college prep programs.
Many of these special opportunities are combined with community service activities, summer internships, and year-long internships, which can help foster a strong sense of civic responsibility in students. When these learning pathways are integrated with in-depth college-level senior research projects, students have a much greater chance of developing a comprehensive range of skills essential for success in the countless opportunities available in college.
The college prep experience in the post-COVID era has revived national and international travel. The expansion of co-curricular activities often involves students in mentorship programs with alumni, offering them valuable insights into the modern work world. Additionally, a diverse range of intramural and interscholastic athletic experiences fosters collaboration, cooperation, teamwork, adaptability, leadership and discipline, all of which are essential for success in today’s highly competitive collegiate and post-collegiate environments.
The new college prep experience provides more flexible and distinct learning activities that promote intellectual, moral, social and personal development. It emphasizes a thoughtful commitment to making a meaningful contribution to society. Today’s college prep environments are becoming better equipped to address both traditional scholastic readiness and the broader competencies needed for post-secondary education and beyond.
A robust academic foundation remains crucial to college prep. The best programs bring together the most dedicated and outstanding educators who will rejoice in finding the heart and spirit of their students. The gift of a strong college prep experience goes beyond the foundational elements of reading, writing and ’rithmetic. The college prep experience is about preparation for a rapidly changing world, where cementing powerful core principles and an insatiable desire to make a difference in college and beyond are the desired outcomes. Perhaps the most important aspect of college prep today is realizing the finest life involves a commitment to study, act and engage for the benefit of society.
The new college prep experience aims to nurture curiosity, imagination, inventiveness and responsibility within us. History teaches us that progress is necessary and constant.
As Oliver Wendell Holmes wisely said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” College prep is about cultivating the values within us, enabling students to not only compete in a rapidly evolving world but to sustain an appetite for continuous growth and challenge.
