Thousands of Jobs available for 2020 Census

RED BANK – Adults looking to earn extra money this winter can apply for jobs with the U.S. Census Bureau, officials told the public at a meeting Nov. 20 at the Red Bank Public Library.

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring thousands of individuals to help conduct the 2020 Census. And for the first time, citizens will be able to answer the census online, making it – according to Census Bureau representatives – easier than ever.

Office positions include area census office manager, census field manager, administrative manager, information technology manager, recruiting manager, office operations supervisor and clerical support. In the field, there are positions for recruitment, census field supervision and enumerators.

The first U.S. census was conducted in 1790 and served as an important piece of the country’s history and future.

Mandated in the Constitution, the census is conducted every 10 years and determines how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives. It also allows state officials to redistrict congressional and state legislative districts to account for population changes, among other benefits.

The census asks questions about a resident’s name, sex, age, date of birth, origin, race, relationship, and if they are renters or homeowners. Census takers also ask for phone numbers in case they need to contact that person again.

But all information is private and census takers are sworn to secrecy regarding the information they receive from others. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age. They also must have a valid Social Security number and email address and must pass a background check, the application process and an assessment.

Those interested in working with the 2020 Census team are welcome to apply online at 2020census.gov.jobs or by phone at 1-855-JOB-2020.
