William Joseph Halliday

On Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, William “Bill” Joseph Halliday died peacefully at home in Middletown. Bill was born in Brooklyn to the late Joseph Halliday and Margaret Collins Halliday. He moved to Monmouth County as a youth, where he was a lifelong resident.

He served on the Middletown Police Force starting in 1962 and worked his way up from patrolman to Captain of Detectives. Along the way he earned two master’s degrees, attended the FBI National Academy and even wrote a book, “Jersey Shore Cop.” Following retirement from the police force, Bill became deputy director of the Monmouth County Police Academy. He then found his second calling – teaching – working at Brookdale Community College as a professor in the criminal justice department. There he helped to prepare and mentor future police officers.

Bill loved his family, friends, the Mets and Giants, golf, the racetrack, yardwork and reading. He truly enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.

Bill is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 61 years, Nancy Marshall Halliday; his daughters, Jeanne Lenczyk (Mike) and Nancy “Cissy” Tenenbaum (Mark); his five grandchildren, Meg Thompson (Mikey), Anna Thompson (Joe), Sara Young (Myron), Lauren Tenenbaum and Mark Tenenbaum; three great-grandchildren, Ellie Young, Amira Young and William Thompson; sisters Betty Frederick (Willie) and Carol Halliday; and brother-in-law Gordon Marshall (Mary Jane).

A private burial will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Middletown Helps Its Own or a charity of your choice. Arrangements under the direction of John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
