William “Billy” R. Ryan of Red Bank, 77, passed away Oct. 19, 2024, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan Ryan; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Erica Ryan of Little Silver; his daughter and son-in-law, Abbie and Michael Loughran of Shrewsbury; his grandson Ryan; and granddaughters, Jordan and Samantha.

A visitation was held Oct. 25 at Thompson Memorial Home in Red Bank.

Born in Newark to William E. Ryan Jr. and Lorraine née Porter, Billy grew up in Chatham. His first love, the game of soccer, would see him win a state championship in high school, earn a scholarship to play at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and even play some semi-professional games after college. At Moravian, Billy served as co-captain of the soccer team, became the first member of his family to earn a college degree, and met the love of his life, Susan Rost.

After graduation, he served in the New Jersey National Guard, married Susie and settled in Monmouth County where he served as a senior sales representative for the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.

Moving from Matawan to Little Silver in 1973, he went out on his own shortly thereafter and started to acquire local Independent insurance agencies. In 1977, he founded the Compton-Snyder Agency in Belford and then joined McCue Captains Agency in Little Silver in 2013. Billy made his best and closest lifelong friends in the insurance industry, where he served on various boards and committees within the Independent Agents of Monmouth County and New Jersey throughout his career.

Billy was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends, and comfortable in any social gathering. Known for his sarcasm and quick, dry wit, you knew what “Mr. Bill” was thinking, whether having fun or making fun, with just a look and a devilish smile. He always endeavored to show his guests a good time, whether it be with his legendary, yet mysterious frozen drinks at Driftwood Beach Club or hosting countless parties at their house in Little Silver, the town he called home for nearly 50 years.

He loved live music, visiting the blue waters of the Caribbean, tending his pool, grilling in his backyard, frying turkeys for Thanksgiving and watching his beloved Giants and Yankees play on TV.

After retiring and moving to Shadow Lake Village, Billy found immense joy in later years in his role as PopPop, spending time with his grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan and Samantha. He’ll be missed dearly by his family and close friends.
