FAIR HAVEN
Scott Whittle and Tom Stephenson, authors of the newly released book, “The Warbler Guide,” will present a program and book signing 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Monmouth County Audubon meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Church of the Nativity on Ridge Road. The public is welcome; admission is free.
Warblers are among the most challenging birds to identify. They exhibit an array of seasonal plumages and have distinctive yet often confused calls and songs. In their presentation “The Warbler Guide,” based on their critically acclaimed book of the same name, Whittle and Stephenson tackle the problem of warbler ID and come up with some very useful answers. They will discuss many important but overlooked ID points including overall contrast, subtle facial features, color impression, feather edging, rump contrast, foraging style, location and behavior. Their program will show that even partial views of a bird can be valuable and even diagnostic, and that with the right information, every look at a bird can be a good look.
“The Warbler Guide” will be available for purchase and signing by the authors.

LITTLE SILVER
The Jersey Shore Free School will host a free community lecture by Jeri Quirk, Ph.D., at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, entitled “Sudbury Education: A True Alternative.”
Quirk calls the Sudbury educational model “conscious education” because of the self-directed nature of the curriculum and the fact that Sudbury schools operate as participatory democracies. She will detail the importance of a spiritual model for children who live in a culture that puts them at risk for addictions, violence and unhappiness. Quirk says that the contentment and success of Sudbury graduates when they become adults is well documented.
The Sudbury model of education was first developed outside Boston by the Sudbury Valley School more thanr 45 years ago. It has been studied as an alternative to the traditional system with significant results.
Additional information about the lecture is available by emailing to JerseyShoreFreeSchool@yahoo.com or visiting the school’s website at JerseyShoreFreeSchool.org.
