On Dec. 14, for the 20th year, Christmas carolers spread holiday cheer while donating warm coats and Christmas trees to needy families and individuals.

A troop of more than 50 carolers visited 12 bars in Highlands, Rumson and Sea Bright, culminating in a big celebration with music by Thom White and The Flatliners at Val’s Tavern in Rumson.

Over the years some 650 Christmas trees and more than 10,000 coats have been collected and distributed to charities, including Lunch Break and St. Crispin House at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Red Bank.

Peter Hogan and Chris and James Smith organized the event with a visit from Santa (played by Brian Sheehy) and trolleys full of carolers dressed in their best and most festive holiday attire, entertaining patrons in each bar with wonderful holiday sing-alongs. Songbooks were distributed so everyone could participate.

In addition to Val’s Tavern, the participating establishments were Bahr’s Landing, Chubby Pickle, Off the Hook, Rum Runner, Woody’s Ocean Grille, Ocean House, Tommy’s Tavern and Tap, Barnacle Bill’s, Victory Park Tavern, Salt Creek Grille and Murphy’s.
