Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School junior Evelyn Manelski, pictured second from left with members of the RFH Math League at a competition this past winter, will attend the New Jersey Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University this summer. Evie was selected by RFH’s science teachers as the school’s applicant to the annual program which accepts less than 25 percent of the 300-400 students nominated. Acceptance is based on grades, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service pursuits, academic and extracurricular honors and accomplishments, PSAT scores and a student essay. Evie takes advanced courses in computer science and science at RFH and plans to pursue a career in computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the entertainment industry. During the Rutgers intensive summer program, students collaborate on research projects which are showcased in a conference-style final paper and presentation at a research symposium. Students also participate in a variety of life-skills workshops. Prior year’s programs included site visits to local corporations and activities to connect students with professors, professionals and peers from throughout the state, according to the program website. Normally a residential program, this year’s curriculum may move to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
