Proposed Park in Atlantic Highlands to be Named for Borough’s First...

Atlantic Highlands is looking to honor its first woman mayor by naming a borough park after her. Helen Marchetti became mayor in 1984 and served until 1988. She died Sept. 19, 2023, at the age of 98, after living in Atlantic Highlands her entire life.

Atlantic Highlands Mayoral Question Over as Murphy Drops Suit

The election lawsuit that left the future of the borough’s leadership uncertain came to a surprising end this week. Current Atlantic Highlands Mayor Lori Hohenleitner’s position was confirmed when the suit was withdrawn.

Atlantic Highlands Development Continues

Denholtz Properties, a Red Bank-based real estate developer, broke ground on its Brant Point project on the waterfront just north of downtown. The development will include 16 upscale homes, a waterfront walkway and open space.

Henry Hudson Trail to Get Major Improvements

The Henry Hudson Trail (HHT) will be getting some major improvements over the next several years, including a dedicated “hub” in Freehold Borough and two important extensions that will make hiking and biking on this 10-foot-wide paved trail much more enjoyable.

Atlantic Highlands Harbor Happenings and Planning Board Update

The Harbor Commission held its monthly meeting March 7 at Borough Hall. During the session, commissioner James Krauss provided a report on recreational fishing, which he explained is “extremely important to our head boats, our charter boats, and a huge percentage of our power boats.” Head boats generally take larger numbers of guests out to fish at one time while charter boats are usually contracted by smaller private parties.

Smodcastle Cinemas to Host Benefit Screening of Documentary, ‘A Father’s Promise’

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – Filmmaker Kevin Smith, a Monmouth County native who became co-owner of his childhood movie house in Atlantic Highlands in 2022, recently announced that the theater now known as Smodcastle Cinemas will host a screening of the documentary, “A Father’s Promise,” at 7:30 p.m. March 2.

Atlantic Highlands Council Passes Revised Rent Control Ordinance

At its most recent meeting, the borough council reviewed and voted on a new rent control ordinance to help residents struggling with rising housing costs.

Strada

It was a foggy, damp Thursday night and most of First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands was winding down at the end of the day, but when we opened the door to Strada, a self-proclaimed pizzeria/bar, a party was in full swing.

Avenue has a long history: 65 First Ave. has been home to a real estate company and an insurance company. It once housed Mrs. Gerber’s Used Book Store, Al’s Produce, Fowler’s Novelty Store, Webb’s Shoemakers and Fish & Chips, a seafood restaurant that held its grand opening on Good Friday 1969.
