OCEANPORT – As electric bikes (e-bikes) continue to surge in popularity around the area, local officials are stepping up to address concerns over their safety, particularly among younger riders.

I think everyone would agree that they want to be safe. At home, in the car, at the airport, at work and online.

As electric bicycles – or e-bikes – grow in popularity, so do concerns over rider safety. At the borough council’s July 8 meeting, officials discussed drafting an e-bike ordinance to enforce speed limits, rules and safety guidelines for these motor-assisted vehicles.

Ahead of the summer season, borough officials are looking to crack down on electric bikes (e-bikes), considering regulations and fines the police can enforce.

Six years in the making, the opening of the second roundabout at Brookdale Community College is coming to fruition. County representatives hosted a public information session June 12 to present the project design for public input.
