RED BANK – Officials from the Red Bank Regional High School District (RBR) have formally requested a share of the payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT) funds from the borough as part of a proposed transit village plan, which would redevelop the area surrounding Red Bank’s train station and bring in hundreds of new residents.

RED BANK - Plans to redevelop the borough’s train station area include no more than 400 residential units, 900 parking spaces and 50,000 square feet of retail space, alongside traffic-calming measures, pedestrian-only streets and significant green spaces.

Brimming with ideas and concerns over potential plans for redevelopment of the train station area, more than 60 residents attended a public workshop hosted by borough officials at the senior center July 31.

In a significant development intended to promote transit-oriented growth, the Red Bank Planning Board greenlit a proposal to construct a four-story, 20-unit residential building near the train station.

The borough’s transit village plan, slowed due to the pandemic, is back on track as the Red Bank Planning Board unanimously voted to approve and advance a redevelopment study report to the governing body. The study identifies specific parcels around the train station for redevelopment and is a vital step toward the borough council’s initiative to transform the area into a thriving transit village.

Ending the year with a packed agenda, the borough council made progress on transit village plans and improvements to Count Basie Park and approved two developments coming up on the east side of the borough.

The borough’s transit village designation process, stalled since January 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is back on the agenda.
