Monmouth County’s most populous municipality, Middletown operates under the township committee form of government, with five members elected to staggered three-year terms. At the committee’s yearly reorganization meeting, members designate a mayor and a deputy mayor from their ranks to serve for one year.

At its workshop meeting Oct. 3, the township committee unanimously approved $5 million in bond ordinances for park renovations and design costs for public improvements, including to the Middletown Arts Center.

A dispute over undeveloped land in Middletown Township has become a back-and-forth between the mayor and the director of a foundation tasked with preserving open space in the county.

Few people associate the history of Monmouth County with slavery, nor the rest of the state for that matter, yet New Jersey was the last northern state to abolish the act.
