The unofficial start of summer on the Jersey Shore is marked by the rhythm of waves dancing along the sand and the scent of saltwater in the air. Locals and visitors alike flock to our beaches, restaurants, bars and shops to soak in the quintessential “Jersey Shore Summer.” Beach bars and clubs throw open their doors. Outdoor tables are set for long lunches and late dinners under the warm sun. And yes – for better or for worse – paid parking returns.

You know it’s summer when Pier Village in Long Branch hums with energy, when the Stone Pony Summer Stage brings live music to the Asbury Park boardwalk and when beach badges are clipped to bags from Sea Bright to Manasquan. Ice cream lines stretch outside Strollo’s in Long Branch and Hoffman’s in Point Pleasant. Boats return to their slips in Monmouth Beach and Atlantic Highlands, and downtowns from Red Bank to Freehold buzz with business. Barbecues are fired up for weekend parties and shore homes are opened for the season. Summer is a part of the DNA makeup of New Jerseyans.
But perhaps nothing captures the spirit of the season quite like dining outdoors – where each bite and sip comes with a view. From beachside dive bars to full service restaurants, here are a few of our favorite outdoor dining spots to hit this season.

Bahrs Landing Highlands

Nestled along the Navesink River in Highlands, Bahrs Landing has been serving up iconic lobster rolls since 1917. A favorite among locals, it offers the unique convenience of arriving by boat, fueling up, and grabbing a delicious bite. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline.

Donovan’s Reef Beach Bar Sea Bright

Named one of the 21 best beach bars in America by Thrillist in 2018, Donovan’s Reef is the ultimate spot to soak up the Jersey Shore vibes with a drink in hand. Originally purchased in 1976, it stood as the only beach bar in Monmouth County – and one of the few along the entire coast. Today, it remains a standout among a growing list of popular seaside hangouts. There’s truly no better place to sip an Orange Crush than at Donovan’s Reef.

One Willow Highlands

For a perfect evening on the water and live music on its outdoor patio, head to One Willow in Highlands. Enjoy breathtaking views of Sandy Hook and the New York City skyline while savoring fresh oysters and crafted cocktails. The vibrant waterfront atmosphere pairs perfectly with their seasonal menu and sunset backdrop. Interested in getting there by boat? Reserve a slip at Sandy Hook Marina and arrive in style. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night or a lively evening with friends, One Willow delivers a perfect coastal experience.

River Pointe Inn Rumson

Unwind at The Ivy at River Pointe Inn after a sun-soaked day at the beach. Known for its chic ambiance, spend your evening sipping martinis and enjoying oysters in the newly renovated Ivy Garden.

Boondocks Red Bank

Located on the Navesink River in Red Bank, Boondocks is an iconic, no-frills lobster shack. Catch one of their famous lobster nights while watching the sun dip below the horizon. They don’t have a liquor license, so be sure to bring your own bottle. My recommendation is Presqu’ile Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. It is salty, creamy and delicious, and it would pair perfectly with lobster. Can’t find Presqu’ile at your local shop? Look for other Santa Barbara Chardonnays; try producers like Sandhi, Melville and Tyler.

Parker House Sea Girt

As one of the first buildings constructed in Sea Girt in 1878, the Parker House has remained an iconic landmark for generations. While it’s not primarily known for its food, it is famous for its lively bar scene – where you can enjoy live music and party on the porch. If you are a local or summer on the Shore you certainly have memories at Parker House.

Palmetto Asbury Park Boardwalk

If you are looking for something new, try Palmetto on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Palmetto is serving flavors of coastal Southern cuisine, bringing the flavors of Charleston to the Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore native Chef James Avery brings Southern charm and Jersey soul to every dish. Try this new spot then walk directly to the beach after eating to receive the quintessential Jersey Shore summer experience.

2nd Jetty Sea Bright

A local favorite for fresh seafood in a laid-back beach setting, 2nd Jetty in Sea Bright offers vibrant outdoor dining just steps from the ocean. With live music on warm evenings, it’s the perfect spot for a night out. Take a bottle of your favorite bubbly to enjoy with the raw bar selection. Look for a sparkling wine from Spain – also known as Cava – my go-to bubbles when I’m not sipping Champagne.

Mule Barn Tavern Sandy Hook National Park

Situated in a historic mule barn within Gateway National Park, the Mule Barn Tavern brings outdoor dining to one of the most popular beach destinations on the shore. Soak in the sun on the Sandy Hook beaches and then head to the Mule Barn Tavern to enjoy a bite to eat under the summer sun!
